Christmas at the South Pole.
Needless to say we ALWAYS have a white Christmas.

We decorated the galley mid December on a Sunday afternoon.  Seeing as how I worked nights I didn't think I could participate.  I had stayed up way later than I expected and as I was getting ready for bed I realized that the activities were about to start down in the galley so I put back on my clothes and headed down.  It was a wonderful decision as I had a great time!

Wrapping greenery with Christmas lights
is more difficult than it looks, although
Darryn and myself are giving it a try.
Larry and Louise show off our
decorated serving line.
Deciding where to put an ornament
is no easy decision.
Susan and Robo contemplate ol' Tanenbaum.
Although he doesn't look so cheery in
this picture, Jeremy was the about the
most forever pleasant person on station
all summer long.
You would think that one person could
handle garland around a post, but
apparently beakers such as Darryn and
Robert need more assistance.

A couple of nights before the Big Day a number of people got together to
help make pies and cookies for Christmas.

Gene and Sonja on cookies
and
Rich on pecan pies
Christmas Eve, falling on a Friday,
naturally brought everyone to Slushies to
begin the celebration.  Since I worked nights I never managed to get up early enough to make it to Slushies before.  I figured Christmas Eve was a good reason to make the added effort and below you see me with Darryn and Daren.

Christmas Eve we also had the Christmas Gift Exchange.  It was one of those
Chinese Auction type affairs complete with disagreements about how to actually do it.

Alex, Carol, and Anita were our
hostesses for the evening.
Here are Bruce and Gene exchanging their
presents for a number...you know the drill.
Sebastian made the marionette, and
Sparkles got to take it home.
Jim and Katherine are checking out this
miniature Ceremonial South Pole.
Cheryl and Roger recited their poem
'Twas the Night Before Christmas,
South Pole style.
Even though Santa lives at the North Pole, he managed to make it to the South Pole too!

'Twas the night before Christmas ...

'Twas the night before Christmas
And all around the Pole
All the electricians were smashed
Getting drunk was their goal

The arch was all hung
With metal workers up there
In hopes to make the deadline
So Raytheon wouldn't care

The plumbers were all stuck
In the upper galley bowl
Hoping that the overflow
Wouldn't reach to the Pole

The cargoides were looking
For yet another pallet crate
Heaven to Betsy, look what popped out-
An internet playmate

Martin's mechanics were lovin' it
Livin' high on the hog
In their new shop, no more slipping
No more fuel smell
And bummer, no more cigarettes or grog

The miners were a venting
Complaining of the cold
Till they hit a vein, not of shit
But of platinum and gold

The UTs were all fishing
In the sewer outfall we're told
We're not sure what it was they caught
But it wasn't platinum or gold

The Doc was issuing cold tabs
Seeing the dying and the hurts
Don't slip, don't fall, or get paralyzed
Unless you've called him first

The beakers, well the beakers
They've got the brains, they've got the heads
Without them we wouldn't be here
Without us they'd all be dead

The FMC, they have no fears
They build things and dig ditches
With Carlton Walker as their lead
They're hearty sons-of-bitches

The cooks, they were a plottin'
Stirring up some juicy brews
Is it prime rib or is it hot dogs?
PLEASE give us the news!

The station administration
Gives us emails everyday
"Don't do this, don't do that"
And for sure...
"Don't let your pee go astray!"

Comms, comms, here is what we say
They are the greatest in every way
But for us, we're waiting for the day
The day Neil bids us on our way
"The plane is ready for boarding.  Thank you
for visiting the South Pole.  Don't let the
door hit you in the ass on the way out....
That is all...."

Computer nerds??,
We love it, we fight it, we mope
What's a computer without MAPCON or email?
A 2 minute shower without soap?

Of the operators what can we say...
On Spermi, on Kristi, on Laura, on J.P., and Joe"
"On Nan, on Jake, on Kurt, on Wolf, on Tommy,
on Sheridan???"
Oh hell, we don't know...

It's time to go, we've played it safe
As well we truly must
We've not been cased, not made the list
And we'll recycle this with Susie Sawdust

With this end we'll try
To make it right
Merry Christmas to all
And to all a good night

In the afternoon Daren and Von
played a Christmas Concert
over the radio for the other stations,
and anyone else who happened to be
listening as well.
Let me leave you with the beautiful
Silver Christmas Tree.
After I took this year's picture I put it
on top of the galley for all to see and enjoy.
